What is a Timelock Restriction?
A timelock restriction is a temporary enforcement action imposed by Meta (WhatsApp’s parent company) when it detects behavior that may violate its usage policies. When a number is under a timelock:- Messages to new contacts are blocked: You cannot initiate conversations with phone numbers you haven’t messaged before.
- Existing conversations continue to work: Numbers with an existing chat history can still send and receive messages normally.
- The restriction is temporary: It lasts for a specific duration (usually a few hours to several days) and is lifted automatically by Meta.
Types of Timelock Restrictions
Meta may apply different levels of restrictions depending on the severity of the detected behavior:Block New-Contact Outreach Only
The most common type. WhatsApp blocks your number from sending messages to new contacts, but your instance remains connected. You can:- Continue messaging contacts with an existing chat history
- Receive incoming messages from anyone
- Use the main phone’s WhatsApp app normally
Disconnect and Block New-Contact Outreach
A more severe enforcement. In addition to blocking new-contact messages, Meta disconnects your session entirely. When this happens:- Your instance is logged out and requires a fresh QR code scan to reconnect
- Messages to both new and existing contacts are blocked until you reconnect
- After the restriction period ends, you must scan the QR code again to resume use
How Hypersender Helps You Manage Timelocks
When Meta places a timelock on your number, Hypersender detects it automatically and takes the following actions:Dashboard Warning Banner
A visible warning appears on your instance’s connection page in the Hypersender dashboard, showing:- The type of restriction applied
- Remaining time until the restriction is lifted (e.g., “2 days, 5 hours remaining”)
- The exact date and time when the restriction ends
- Whether you’ll need to reconnect by scanning the QR code
Email Notification
You will receive an email notification explaining the restriction, what is blocked, and what your options are. You will receive at most one email per day while the restriction is active.API Error Guidance
When you attempt to send a message to a new contact while under a timelock, the API returns a clear error message explaining that a temporary restriction is in place and when it ends — so your application can handle it gracefully. What You Should Do During a Timelock
- Continue messaging existing contacts: Conversations with people who have previously messaged you or you have messaged before will still work.
- Use a different instance if urgent: If you need to reach new contacts immediately, consider using another WhatsApp number connected to Hypersender.
- Let the restriction expire naturally: Do not attempt to bypass or work around the restriction — this can lead to more severe enforcement.
- Review your sending practices: Timelocks are often triggered by high-volume outreach to unknown numbers. Review our guide on avoiding blocks and number warm-up guide.
Preventing Future Timelocks
The best way to avoid timelock restrictions is to follow WhatsApp’s guidelines for healthy messaging:- Warm up new numbers gradually before sending at scale. See our number warm-up guide.
- Let customers message you first whenever possible. User-initiated conversations are much safer.
- Maintain a healthy reply rate: If few recipients respond, Meta may consider your messages unwanted.
- Avoid sending to large lists of unknown numbers in a short period.
- Personalize your messages and provide clear opt-out instructions.
